Give Kids a Smile Day!
Alright so today, Saturday, I volunteered to participate in national Give Kids a Smile day. I must admit at 6 am this morning when my alarm went off I wanted to fake sick, but it turned out to be a great experience. GKAS day is a national event where dentists, hygienists, and assistants volunteer to give dental treatment for free to those in need all over the country. We served the Ogden area and had over 200 children and their families waiting for cleanings, sealants, fillings, etc. It was a crazy busy day. Alone, I ended up seeing 10 patients, and I left 2 hours before the end! It was nuts! There were hispanic kids everywhere, and they are so cute!! Many of the children had never had their teeth cleaned, so it was very rewarding to teach them brushing/flossing, and to clean their teeth and improve their health! I liked the experience because I was on my own, I didn't need instructors to help me make decisions. I also got great scaling practice! Luckily all of the children I saw behaved very well, otherwise it probably wouldn't have felt like such a good day!
